The Milk Project at Raphael

Raphael in India provides milk daily to its residents and patients (who are mostly vegetarian) as part of a balanced diet to improve their nutrition and health. Called the Milk Project, it has been funded by the Ryder-Cheshire Foundation New Zealand since the project started in 2008.

The milk is sourced from the Dehradun Milk Federation, a closely monitored company ensuring the milk does not contain any impurities or contaminants. The milk is delivered in sealed 500 ml packets. It is given to all those who reside at the centre.

The Milk Project costs NZ$10,000 per year.

A Second Tuberculosis Ward at Klibur Domin

The World Health Organisation is becoming increasingly concerned about the rapid spread of Multi Drug Resistant – Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in remote villages in Timor-Leste.

Klibur Domin has the only long-term MDR-TB treatment facility in Timor-Leste and is seen as a key player in getting on top of this major health problem.

To help meet demand, a second MDR-TB Ward is being built at Klibur Domin.

The first MDR-TB Ward was built in 2010 and has successfully treated many patients over the past seven years.  As MDR-TB is the very worst strain of TB, the patients are very sick and need to take a cocktail of medication which has a similar effect of them as Chemotherapy.  They generally spend around eight months in the isolation ward.  Some succumb to the disease. 

The new Ward will have five single bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom.  There will be an inside kitchen/dining room and an external area where the patients can sit in a well ventilated area.

Ryder-Cheshire Foundation New Zealand is raising the funds to help build this second TB ward.
